There Is A First For Everything... Liz McClarnon Swimwear Review

A week before I went on holiday I was contacted by Fashion World* which asked me if I wanted to do a review of Liz McClarnon range of swimwear. I suggested I could compare if the different styles would give any support and how they looked on bigger girls like myself. I love the prints in this range. They are so cute and vivid colours tick the boxes for me.

First out I am going to share the bikini with you. I have never ever owned a bikini before, so I was conquering my fear to be reviewing a bikini, but here we go.

I chose the gorgeous flamingo print for the bikini and I dreaded the the top would be too small for my huge boobs, but I sized up to a size 26 to accommodate my girlies. I wouldn't say it is the best support I could have had since there is no wires in the top, but it is a lot better than I expected. The top is a halterneck. Normally when I wear halternecks it kills my neck due to the weight of my breasts. I did not feel any discomfort wearing this though. It felt comfortable. But the straps are streched as you can see in this photo

I guess it depends on what you feel comfortable with personally. The cups could have been bigger for me (I'm a 40M cup), but I think for most girls they will be big enough as they are stretchy. The foam cups can also be removed if you need more space and this helps in making them more covering. I have the cups in in these photos.

The bikini bottoms are gorgeous!! I love them! They are so cleverly designed cause they have drawstrings on the sides so that you can choose the leg cut you prefer. I like mine wider so I chose to keep them longer.

Wearing a bikini is not for everyone, but I think that the more you don't care what other people think the easier it will be for you to wear one. I had never thought I would wear a bikini to a beach, but since trying this one on and taking the photos it has made me more courageous to do that. English summer can't come soon enough so I can go down to the south coast and wear my lovely flamingo bikini.

What I like so much about this range is that it comes in all sizes from 12-32 which means that it cater for a lot of sizes.

I think this design is so sexy, you get a real pin up feel and it feels luxurious so if you want to feel a bit extra special on the beach this year then I would highly recommend this bikini.

I will review the swimdress tomorrow so check back then. :)

Getting To Know- Michelle

Today I'm starting this series of posts that I will have every month from now on. I have decided to interview other plus size bloggers to find out a bit more about what inspire them and why they started blogging.

I chose to start with this love girl from Ireland, Michelle who blog over at Stage Your Presence and here is her interview.

Name Michelle Hogan
Living Cork, Ireland

Age 29
Blog http://stageyourpresence.blogspot.ie/

So Michelle you are from Ireland, is there many plus size bloggers from Ireland?

Only 2 that I can think of off hand but there's possibly more I haven't come across yet. Every time I go online I seem to come across new fantastic blogs but most are UK bloggers. I hope I come across more Irish ones, that would be great!

How long have you been blogging?

Only since January properly. I started a blog about a year ago, posted once and then it was radio silence for a long time. I just didn't know what I wanted to say and I wasn't really sure if I was comfortable posting pictures of myself and putting myself out there. Then one day I just decided that instead of just reading blogs I wanted to get involved.

How did you get into blogging?

I came across a blog one day totally by accident, possibly on twitter and read it kind of wondering what it was all about. It was a body positive blog and I couldn't believe I hadn't known people had blogs like this before. Initially I guess I was more curious than anything because I too would have been in the "oooh I can't wear that, it's not flattering" brigade. I really envied the confidence these amazing ladies had to wear what they wanted when they wanted without giving a damn what people said or thought. One blog led to another blog and then another and another. I knew I wanted to be a part of it but, like I said, it took me a while to get the confidence.

Why did you decide to start a blog?

I love clothes, fashion and shopping is the simple answer! I guess I wanted my own little online space to share my outfits, nice things I had bought and to try to connect with people a bit too. I'm shy until you get to know me in a lot of social situations so this seemed like a good way to talk to new people, especially those with an interest in clothes and things like me.

How much time do you spend on blogging?

Not as much as I want to. Depending on how many posts I do in a week it would normally be a few hours.

Where would you like to take your blog?

I have no idea just yet! I feel like I'm still learning a lot but I don't see it evolving into a lifestyle or beauty blog. I want to keep the focus mainly on fashion/style so I guess it's more like my own personal fashion diary of pictures as my style evolves.

How would you describe your style?

That is so hard for me to do! I'm so good when it comes to other people but when it comes to myself I find it hard to describe me. I'm a rock chick at heart who likes things that are a bit silly a lot of the time but then really pretty and girly at other times. I am a magpie for studs, tartan and check, Dr Martens and skulls. I live in dresses and love things that really stand out as a bit different.. I think my style has always been this way. I was like this when I was younger too with studs, baggy jeans, band t-shirts, hoodies and as much black eyeliner as I could manage. I loved anything Emily Strange and The Nightmare Before Christmas or music related. There wasn't much choice in plus sizes back then so I had a very limited wardrobe and accessorized everything as much as I could to change an outfit.

Who or what is your fashion inspiration?

It took me a long time to think this question over because there is no one person that inspires me. I think I have been shaped as a person(and in style) by the music that I have listened to and the communities I feel like I identify more with. I discovered rock and metal music when I was 15 and started buying music magazines around then too. Seeing women like Brody Dalle, Amy Lee and Gwen Stefani made me realise dressing how I wanted and like an individual was more important to me than looking "cool" or sexy. As soon as I started dressing for me that's when I became really happy.

How is your wardrobe?

Bursting at the seams! I'm a hoarder - there is no doubt about that. In the last few years it has gone from being mostly stocked with black to being a rainbow of colours. I also only started wearing dresses in the last couple of years. Before that it was all jeans and converse with long tops or black pants and shirts for work. I blame/thank online retailers for expanding my wardrobe!

What takes up most space?

I have a love affair with bags that has been on-going for a good 10 years now. I have a box full of them I have to keep in another room and then probably another wardrobe full in my room. It's not my fault I swear! It's a compulsion I have to give really beautiful bags a nice home. I have well over 100.

What are you like? The bargain hunter or are you quality over quantity?

I am a total bargain hunter. I have become quite a savvy shopper and very rarely pay full price for something unless I really love it. The only things I spend a lot on are my Dr Martens and bags. I have been known to spend outrageous amounts on bags but that has mostly stopped as I am in college.

Do you blog about anything else than fashion?

Sometimes I blog if something happens in my life that has a big impact on me, if I am stressed out or something. I had always kept things in before I started my blog, getting more stressed or angry until eventually I couldn't take it and either exploded into a messy ball of tears or anger but now I write it out instead. It's a good outlet for me.

What do you like doing apart from blogging?

Hanging out with my friends is huge for me. They are more like family than anything and have been a huge support for me. We go for tea a lot, out for drinks or for a meal and to the cinema. I also love going to gigs. Unfortunately none of my friends are into the same music as me but I still drag them to gigs with me or else I go on my own. I never feel as calm or as at home anywhere as I do when I'm at a gig of a band I love. When music reverberates through the floor and you can feel it running through you - it's just amazing. Reading is my other huge passion. I could get up at 9 in the morning and start reading and not stop for the entire day or night. I get lost in the worlds a good writer creates. It's the best kind of escapism.

What is a must have item for the summer?

A great maxi dress. Being 5 foot 8 it's sometimes tough to find a maxi that is properly floor sweeping and a little bit swishy. I love how you can dress them up or down depending on accessories and go from day time to night time.

Favourite online and high street shop?

Online is Asos and high street is Primark. I love that Primark now go up to a size 20 and they have a great Marvel range in stores lately. Asos is the first site I go to for everything really now. Their curve range is brilliant and always has loads of choice. My wishlist is NEVER empty.

Do you have music or TV on in the background when you blog? What do you listen to/watch?

I have tv on in the background but it's only really for noise. I watch very little tv anyway. I can't listen to music when I blog because it distracts me too much. I end up singing along and losing my train of thought.

Tell us about your best bargain

My best bargain has got to be a pair of Dr Martens I bought about 6 years ago. They are black with a yellow spray paint foot print across the front and I got them brand spanking new for €40.

I hope you liked this interview and if any of you would like to be interviewed please let me know either comment or send me an email. :)

While We Wait For The Summer

It's so lovely out there now and I love all the signs of spring around me. Trees are blooming, birds are singing and collecting twigs to their nest, people come out on the streets and parks for socializing and it is very inspriring. I love spring. It is probably my favourite season. I love the smells, colours, the temperatures, the birds are singing so beautifully in the morning when I go to work, the days are longer, I can pack away heavy boots and coats and wear a dress with bare legs. Finally my favourite, I can roll down the window of the car and have my hand out the window to feel the warm, but not too warm air.... luxery!! :)
I love walking around in lighter clothes and shoes and maxi dresses is my go to in the sun. I never used to like them, but the last couple of years I have found out that shorter girls can wear them too. I'm 5'6, but it works!! I love wearing them to work as they are airy, but still smart enough for the office.

This is my favourite maxi dress. It is from New Look last year and I think I have shown it on the blog before, but it is such a great dress that it  deserve to be showed off again.

I wear this dress  all the time and when I got it down from the attic I had to wear it the day after. I guess everyone has a dress that is there go to dress and this is one of the ones I come back to all the time.

Here is a few other must have spring pieces I have on my wish list. Payday please come quickly!!

Outside our house we have these two amazing blooming trees and coming out the door to go to work in the morning is just the best this time of year. It lifts your spirits. It's all about the little things in life and spring surely makes me happy.

What season is your favourite?

Bigger Boobs? Then This Dress Is For You!

I have already written my post from the Marisota Pop Up Shop which you can read here, but I wanted to show you a special dress for me. The orange dress from Bespoke fit. The dress itself is lovely. The design is lovely and very flattering. When Karen picked this dress for me I was very doubtful due to the colour, but when I tried it on I was blown away. It was so flattering and I didn't hate the colour on me either. When I came out of the fitting room everyone was saying how lovely I looked and here are the photos of me in the dress.  And you can find the dress here.

At the Pop Up Shop in the fabulous vintage inspired chair. My lovely Simply Boots goes very well with the dress too.

This photo is taken on the day of the Curvissa event where I wore the dress for the first time. I felt so nice in the dress. I love the way I have plenty of room for my boobs without it looking oversized and the details in the front are lovely.

My lovely hair and make up done by the professional stylist at the event made me look all beautiful and made the whole look tie together.

I wore the dress with my feetless tights from Evans and my lovely slingback/ballerina shoes also from Marisota.

Love the zip detail at the back.

Very flattering for a bigger bust.

And it has pockets!!! I'm totally in love with this dress and has aldready worn it so much. For work, for dates, to family dinners and I have to thank Karen for showing me that orange is actually a colour I can dress in. It doesn't wash me out and I actually find myself to like orange more and more..

Love Every Body 5- Tummy

This months love every body is quite exciting as it is about my tummy. I think that a lot of us will struggle with this one and so did I to begin with as I thought what good is there about my tummy?
It’s big, it ugly and it is the body part I try to hide the most.

But still my tummy is amazing. It is magical and it has been the home of my lovely daughter for nine months while she was getting ready to come out and see this world. I think sometimes she still would have wanted to still be in there in the cosy, warm and dark room that is only hers.

I think that we are too self critical most times, me included, and doesn't stop to think how amazing this body we live in really is.

When you are pregnant it is so important that you caress your tummy and talk to your tummy for the little baby's sake to recognize your voice when it comes out. Your tummy is the visible sign that you are pregnant and women have a special glow when their tummy is growing. When your tummy is growing it is easy to get stretchmarks and a lot of people hate them. I love mine. And loved them back then when I was pregnant. They are like little reminders of a time in my life I was so happy as I loved being pregnant. I had a great pregnancy apart from the last couple of weeks and I loved showing off my tummy in very fitted clothes. I was so proud. Stretchmarks are beautiful keepsakes of a magical time in a womans life.

Proud stretch marks

Personally I had to have an emergency caesarian so I have a big scar as a reminder of this time. And after a pregnancy a tummy changes and I have a big "sack" of skin/fat/meat on my lower part of my tummy. This part is something I find difficult to like, but I try telling myself that you have got a lovely beautiful daughter that had her home inside your tummy so not strange that your tummy felt a bit battered and bruised by being cut open and stretched like that.

I have also removed my gallbladder so I have operation scars from key hole surgery which is almost not showing anymore apart from the cut I had right under my boobs.

The big focus society has got on having a well toned body and beauty doesn't contribute to accept your flabby tummy. I really wish that more women could accept themselves more, rather look at imperfections as signs of living and start living with the body they have as it is so fantastic.

Cut For Evans- My Experience.

I was very excited when Evans launched their Cut for Evans. Same day as it was launched I ordered the yellow scuba dress and the leggings as they were the items I liked most. I was very excited about getting the clothes, but when I got them I realised quickly that the dress wasn't for me as the colours were a lot brighter than I had imagined. They were more neon colours than a bright yellow.  I knew that they would make me look dead. I tried the dress in the office toilet as I get all my deliveries to work. The fit was lovely, I bought it in a size 24, which was a right fit for my body. I have never seen my face look so grey and dull before as it did in the dress, so I knew I was returning it. I was gutted as I loved the shape, fit and pattern of the dress. Please Evans get something similar in with less bright colours. I am a fan of bright colours, but this was just made me look like I had lost all blood in my body. This dress would look lovely on someone with slightly different colours than me. But for me it was a miss this time.

The leggings on the other hand I loved. Ordered them in size 20 which is a great fit for me. I have worn them a lot over the month and something I have owned it and it is lovely. The details down the leg is amazing and eye catching. I love mixing it in a monochrome look so the pattern can shine on its own. But I have also worn it with different dresses.

In these photos I was on my way travelling so I teamed it up with a lovely jersey dress from New Look with a lovely waterfall drape I bought last year sometime, my lovely cardi from Primark and my go to shoes of this spring from Marisota.

Evans launched a sale on Cut a couple of weeks ago and I ordered the lovely pink print pencil skirt. I really wanted to give the bright colours another chance and I thought that the pink would suit me better. The fit was lovely and I like the material. But the colours was again very bright, a neon pink, so I decided to send it back.
Despite my personal disappointment with the range, apart from the leggings which are amazing, I think that what Evans has done is so exciting and taken a big chance of giving us plus size girls some amazing plus size clothing that are different and more exciting than anything else that I have seen. I hope they continue to launch lovely ranges like this in the future too.

My thoughts on invisible illnesses.

Before I start I will say that this is a very personal post and have very little to do with plus size fashion, but it has a lot to do with how I am as a person and how my illness has shaped me into the person I am today. I always try to see the best in people, but sometimes it is hard cause I don't get the same back just because I have an invisible illness.

I have blogged about it earlier but when Leah talked about this topic on facebook I decided to write about it again as this is one topic that clearly is difficult for many to understand! Possibly one topic that only the ones of us which are in this state, or the nearest to us understand. Probably  because it can rarely be seen on the outside that we are not healthy. Or when it can be seen on us and we are most probably at home / indoors as we don’t want to be around people. We have an invisible illness.

I have struggled with these illnesses(I’m suffering from two different personality disorders, general anxiety disorder, chronic depression and social anxiety that can cause panic attacks) for about 25 years and over the years I have learned a lot about myself and other people, most of all managed to sort which of my friends who are true friends and who are acquaintance.

I do not know how many times I have experienced not being understood or respected when it comes to what I have and do not have the energy to do. Situations where I have explained that it has got nothing to do with that I don’t want contact anymore, it is just difficult to do things sometimes.
The challenge all of us with invisible illnesses have is that it does not show on the outside that there is a shortage of energy and it is therefore easy for those who doesn’t know this themselves first handedly  to think that we are lazy , antisocial , shy or simply can’t be bothered.  That said , it's not about bothering or not bothering,  it 's all about prioritizing my security.

I have been quite lucky with my best friends and family as they all try to understand and don’t put a pressure on me if I have a bad day, and that 's what we're living with these illnesses need! We need to get some praise  that we finally take our needs into account and not what we think that everyone expects from us. But then at the same time we also need to be able to do things without it being talked about behind our backs  about how quiet we are in certain situations or the opposite I saw him/her  is at work, training ,café ( or any other place ) and the he/she looked super healthy and really energetic so I think that he/she must have energy enough.  I 'm so tired of people speaking that way about us ! That some see us as lazy anti social benefit fraudsters. Most of us have normal jobs and those who doesn’t hasn’t got their benefits for being lazy. The system doesn’t work like that.

Good people do not talk/ think like that, they allow others to be who they are for a simple reason :
THEY KNOW , THEY DO NOT see what happens INSIDE another person and they know that what they see is only a SURFACE . They know that you can have energy for a short while, anywhere from a few hours to a few days only to disappear again. They allow us to be as we are , and that's okay. Upon meeting people like that it gives me hope again that someday more and more people will understand what we are going through.

There is one thing I dare to say ! There is absolutely NONE of us who want to be in this state and if there was a magic way of getting out of it I would do all I could to do so.

Before I end this post I have been thinking of a few things that most of your probably have experienced. If not prepare and consider yourself lucky.

  •   If you do something, prepare for the comment - "So, you can do it ,I thought you were ill" said in a suspicious tone.

  •   If you don’t do anything, prepare yourself for the comment - " You must be able to do a little bit , even if you are ill." said in a reproachful tone.

  •   Are you smiling and happy, you are greeted with the comment - "I thought you were ill ."

  •   If you’re not smiling , you are greeted with the comment - "Keep your head up, nothing gets better by you being down and negative . Be positive, that makes everything better. "

  •   If you take part in something social , always be prepared that someone makes a comment , not because they are not happy to see you there , but because they "do not realize that you can be on your feet, you're ill! "

  •   If you don’t take part in something social , the comment : - "Yes, but don’t you think you would have benefited from getting out among the people? "

  •   Any answer to the question - "How are you ?" - Will always be the wrong answer . Either because you are too positive or too negative.

  •   Always be prepared to explain and defend why you do what you do in any situation , and be aware that your response will always be subject to discussion.

  •   People who are ”healthy”  will be competing to tell you the solution to all your problems - it is just to do like them! They have remained healthy.

This? might sound cynical, but hey that is what having to defend you for 25 years does to you. I'm always prepared cause I know I will always meet someone that doesn't understand. This is what all of us have to try and change and by raising our voices hopefully we take a small step in the right direction.
